At the age of 9, Marv Herzog played the piano at home. At the age of 12, he played the clarinet in the school band. At the age of 14, he played the accordion. He practiced the accordion every day until he knew enough songs to form his own band. Their first performance was New Year's Eve. Marv was 14 years old.


He had his own band for 56 years, and, during his entire career, he never read a note of music. He played every song by ear and could play any song in any key. He would listen to a song once, sometimes twice, and immediately play it.
Marv recorded 33 albums and traveled over a million miles from coast to coast throughout America playing for countless dances, festivals, and concerts until his death in 2002.

In 2007, the Marv Herzog Hotel and Museum opened in his honor so future generations could learn the legacy that was Marv Herzog.

This scholarship, created in honor of Frankenmuth's own Marv Herzog, is available to any student enrolled in a university music program. Scholarship funds are to be applied to tuition.

Criteria for Selection:
The Marv Herzog Music Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:
  1. The applicant must either be a member of the current graduating class of a High School or a recent graduate (college freshman, sophomore, junior or seniors). Preference will be given to Frankenmuth High School seniors who meet selection criteria then to college applicants with preference given to freshmen, then sophomores, then juniors and lastly seniors.
  2. High school seniors are encouraged to provide a recording of a performance related to their talent that they intend to major or minor in the music area. The recording may be in currently acceptable electronic means determined by the Selection Committee.
  3. The applicant must be planning to attend a college or university full-time and prior to distribution of the scholarship funds must be accepted and enrolled.

  5. The applicant must demonstrate academic skills by having a grade point higher than a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale while taking courses generally regarded as college preparatory. If a college applicant, the same grade point scale will be used.
  6. Selection of the winner(s) may also be based on the financial need of the student for assistance with college costs.
  7. The applicant must demonstrate service to his school, church or community through active participation.
  8. The scholarship will be awarded without regard to sex, race, religion, place of birth, or personal handicap.
  9. Only Donor's immediate family defined as children are excluded from selection for this scholarship.
