Jane E. Hartman Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship to help aspiring nurses.


Jane Hartman dedicated her life to helping others.


Now, thanks to the Frankenmuth Community Foundation scholarship created in her name, that legacy will live on for decades to come.


“The Foundation helped me set up the Jane E. Hartman Memorial Scholarship for students who plant to attend college to become a registered nurse, just like Jane. Nursing was very important to Jane, and I wanted her to be remembered for all her hard work,” said Duane Hartman, her husband of nearly 35 years.
Jane (Sny) Hartman, 66, died in December 2012, just four months after being diagnosed with liver cancer. The couple had lived in Frankenmuth since 1984 and raised their son, Christopher, here.

Jane, who graduated in 1964 from Bridgeport High School, earned her degree three years later from the well-known Bronson School of Nursing in Kalamazoo. She was on staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Michigan before working as an operating room nurse in Houston, Waco, Texas, and Tampa, Fla. 

She later returned to Michigan and worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Saginaw. Then Jane moved to St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw, where she returned to the operating room.

“In fact, Jane was on the very first open heart surgery team that took place at St. Mary’s in 1984,” Duane said.

After leaving St. Mary’s, Jane worked at various doctors’ offices in the region, as well as Lutheran Home Hospice Care (now Wellspring Lutheran Services), where she helped establish the agency’s hospice program.

“Jane was a dedicated person and served the needs of others. She wouldn't ask someone to do something that she wouldn't do herself. When she was on call as a nurse, always put the patient before family,” Duane said.

Along with her busy nursing career, Jane was a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church and volunteered on 10 or more medical mission trips to Guatemala and Honduras.

Duane said establishing the scholarship with the Frankenmuth Community Foundation was very simple and straightforward.

“We were very happy to be there for Mr. Hartman and help him create this scholarship that will help other Frankenmuth students follow in Jane’s footsteps,” said Stephen C. List, Foundation executive director.

Duane said he believes his wife would be surprised, but honored, by the scholarship.

“I think she’d say it was a good idea and that maybe it’d be an inspiration to someone becoming a registered nurse just like her,” he said.

The first Jane E. Hartman Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in spring 2017, List said.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The Jane E. Hartman Memorial Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:
  1. The applicant must be a female member of the current graduating class of Frankenmuth High School who is pursuing a degree to be a Registered Nurse. In addition, the applicant who is a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church will be given a higher priority than applicants who are members of any other church
  2. The applicant must be planning to attend a college or university full-time, and prior to distribution of the scholarship funds must be accepted and enrolled.
  3. The applicant must demonstrate academic skills by having a grade point of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking courses generally regarded as college preparatory.
  4. Selection shall also be based on financial need of the student for assistance with college cost.
  5. The applicant must demonstrate service to her school, church or community through active participation.
  6. The scholarship will be awarded without regard to race, place of birth, or personal handicap.
  7. Other criteria as recommended by the Donor.
